Book Challenges for 2011

January 5, 2011

Book Challenge time! I’m sure I’ll add more challenges to try this year, but I’m shooting for challenges that I’ll actually finish. But of course my eyes are always bigger than they should be when it comes to books, but I can’t really help myself. It certainly doesn’t help when I’ve found a brand new place to shop for books. A few weeks ago we got ourselves a new used book place, 2nd & Charles. Apparently we are only the 2nd location they have anywhere and I love this place! You get great books for cheap plus you can take in your own stuff and get cash or store credit. They have books, movies, musics, games, etc. I find myself there at least once a week. I even found a book series that I haven’t read since high school and I’m slowly but surely collecting them all. Every time I go I find more stuff. :D But moving on, that plus my new nookcolor will surely help me with this year’s challenges. You can find my challenges on my book challenge page. It’s also listed on the sidebar all the time. You can see all the books I’ve read for each challenge there. Some of which I may review either here or on my Goodreads account.

The 2011 Young Adult Reading Challenge. I thing this will be a pretty easy one because I do love a great YA books. There are a few that I’m definitely looking forward to reading this year, which will help in my challenge. There are four levels of completion:
The Mini YA Reading Challenge – Read 12 Young Adult novels.
The “Fun Size” YA Reading Challenge – Read 20 Young Adult novels.
The Jumbo Size YA Reading Challenge – Read 40 Young Adult novels.
The Mega size YA Reading Challenge – Read 50+ Young Adult novels.
While I don’t think I’ll be reading 50 YA books I’m sure I can get through 12 of them, I hope. Plus it’s for a whole year.

The 100+ Reading Challenge. This one is fun because it counts pretty much any book I read this year. :D So I doubt there will be any problem reading 100 or more books. Re-reads from previous years count as well as anything I read for other challenges. So this isn’t really a challenge in reading as it will be in keeping track of my books.

The 2011 E-Book Challenge. Another easy one. I just have to read any book on my nook for this challenge to work. There are four levels:
– Curious – Read 3 e-books.
– Fascinated – Read 6 e-books.
– Addicted – Read 12 e-books.
– Obsessed – Read 20 e-books.
Since I’ve been reading a lot of books on my nook lately, this one should also be an easy one to finish.

Dystopia Challenge
Credited to BA Reading Challenges

This is the Dystopia Challenge. This should be a fun one because some of the books I’ve been wanting to read are in this category. There are different levels to acquire to below:
1. Asocial– Choose 5 books to read
2. Contagion – Choose 15 books to read
3. Soldier – Choose 30 books to read
4. Drone – Choose 50 books to read
5. Conditioned – Choose 75 books to read
For extra hard challenges
1. Brainwashed – Choose 76-125 books to read
2. Totalitarian – Choose 126-200 books to read

Right now I’m going for the Asocial level to just read 5. I don’t want to over stretch myself.

Level II – Read 10 books
Level III – Read 15 books
Level IV – Read 20 books
Level V – Read 20+ books

The start of a new year

January 2, 2011

Credited to wehearit

This is a new year and there are new things to see and do! I’ve finally figured out, after many years of failure, that I’m not really a ‘Resolutions’ type of person. I really don’t do well with those types of goals I think. My mind just doesn’t work that way. If I try to force I end up quitting way to early. I’m not the type of person that likes to feel I have to do something regularly, I get bored really easily. So I’m not going to do that this year. I’m really going for much more broad types of goals, more for improving my life in general and not make specific goals or resolutions. I think it’s best for everyone involved. :D

Now, on to other things. This is a bit late but I figured I’d do quick run down on my book challenges for last year. I started a bit late for please forgive me. I didn’t really even start many of them, much less finish them. You can see all of the challenges I participated in on my book challenge page. They’ll be moving to the bottom of the page soon as I put up my new ones for this year. Of the five that I managed to join last year I completed 2 of them. I finished the Historical Reading Challenge and the Fantasy Reading Challenge. I do plan to join some more challenges this year, hopefully being able to have more time to read.

That being said, I’m hoping that this year will be a great one. I’m really looking forward to starting fresh, despite coming into the new year with a cold. :/ (Christmas was so not fun, let me tell you.) But out with the old and in with the new. I have plans this this year! I’m hoping to be able to see them through to completion this year. *crosses fingers for luck*

Fairy tales…with a twist

July 30, 2010

Hey guys! Sorry I’ve been so MIA. I’ve actually been catching up on a lot of my reading. I have so many new books that I bought with my Barnes and Noble gift card on my new nook. I really love the nook and I take it with me everywhere. Actually, looking up some recommendations online, I found an interest in the author Mercedes Lackey. I’ve been into Fantasy books for a few years now, so it seems a bit odd that I haven’t read her yet since she does write a lot and has been out for a while. But there you go.

Anyway, more specifically I’ve stumbled onto her ‘Five Hundred Kingdoms’ series. It’s a series that shows the more mature side of fairy tales. Basically, in the five hundred kingdoms fairy tales come true everyday and magic is regulated by The Tradition. Things are supposed to happen a certain way and The Tradition ensures that they do. Godmothers and Champions try to make sure that there are the fewest number of casualties as possible in the process. Sometimes there are unhappy endings and sometimes there are happy ones, it just depends on the circumstances.

I’ve actually read the first three books in this series in the past two weeks. That’s how much I like it! I’m actually kind of upset that there’s only 5 written so far. lol I’ve liked all of them so far, but my favorite by far is the first one of the series, ‘The Fairy Godmother’. It’s basically about a girl named Elena whose own fairy tale didn’t quite pan out. She was supposed to be Cinderella, but her prince ended up being 11, which is why she was stuck with her step-family. Anyway, she ends up becoming the Fairy Godmother for her land.

I love Elena’s character! Just because her life may not be going the way she wants it to or expects it to, she is very practical and doesn’t let it get her down for long. The plot is so original and funny, and I love seeing fairy tales in a new light. I’ve always loved to read rewrites of fairy tales but this puts a twist on that. I would recommend it to anyone that likes the fantasy genre or fairy tales. It also has the benefit of helping me to finish one my book challenges. I thought I’d never make any headway.

First Book Down!

May 20, 2010

hundred thousand kingdoms

I’ve finished the first book of many in my numerous reading challenges for this year I’m so excited. It was a book called The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by the author N. K. Jemisin. It was a really wonderful book that I loved to death. It’s the first in trilogy so I really can’t wait for her to come out with the other books. This is actually the author’s debut novel so I’m very impressed with it. Here is a description of the book from the site Goodreads which I just joined:

Yeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian north. But when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is summoned to the majestic city of Sky. There, to her shock, Yeine is named an heiress to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle with a pair of cousins she never knew she had. As she fights for her life, she draws ever closer to the secrets of her mother’s death and her family’s bloody history.

With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Yeine will learn how perilous it can be when love and hate – and gods and mortals – are bound inseparably together.

Anyway, I completely recommend it to anyone who likes to read fantasy like I do. The story will completely suck you in. Also, I’ll list my books as I read them on the Book Challenges page. And for some if not all of them I’ll leave a link to the review I write on Goodreads. If you want to see the review I left for this one just click on the link on that page. See you later!
