Top Ten Favorite Books

August 24, 2010

Credited to The Victorian Web

1. “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Carroll – This happens to be at the top of my list just because I’ve loved this book forever. Even though Disney tried to ruin it for everyone, it is a great book that shows so much imagination (or a really great high, depending who you listen to) that is great for kids and adults. In my opinion anyway.

2. “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott – This is probably the oldest book in my personal library. I’ve read this more times than I can count really. I’ve always loved the story of the sisters. I’ve read both books that come after it and I loved them too, but this is my favorite of the three.

3. The “Harry Potter” Series by J. K. Rowling – I’ve loved this entire series since they first came out. I even turned my sister onto them. I personally like them much better than the movies. Harry is just such a human character, with flaws just like everyone else. Even the supposedly “perfect” characters are portrayed as very human as the series goes on. It has a great plot and characters and is just very entertaining. I was kind of sad to see it end.

4. “Animal Farm” by George Orwell – I’m sure that this was on almost everyone’s required book list in school. I had to read this in high school and I absolutely loved it. I loved the different characteristics of the animals. Orwell’s view of communism is very obvious in the book, but even with that , this books makes it easier to see how communism works, especially for those that have trouble defining it. It’s just a fun read, while also learning something.

5. “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee – This is another book that I’m sure everyone has read. I have to say that I loved both the book and the movie. I related to Scout the most and looked up to Atticus greatly. I still do.

6. “The Fairy Godmother” by Mercedes Lackey – I just reviewed this not too long ago. I had just finished it for one of my book challenges and I love it. I love the new take on old fairy tales. The whole series is great and original, but this first book is my favorite so far. Look here if you want to see my original post, if you haven’t already.

7. “The Thirteenth Tale” by Diane Setterfield – This is an amazing book. I don’t normally read stories like this but it was a Barnes and Noble recommendation and it looked really amazing so I picked it up. I did not regret it at all. It’s an amazing book with great characters and a mysterious story that sucks you in from the start. I would recommend this to anyone that likes a good dramatic story with a great mystery. I liked the characters and it was fun trying to figure out what was true and what wasn’t. The truth in the end is really amazing.

8. “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card – This book is the book that got me interested in Science Fiction. The premise of the story is so amazing and original. I reread this book all the time and I never get tired of it. It has sequels and companion books that follow different characters but this book that started it all is my absolute favorite.

9. “Winter of Fire” by Sherryl Jordan – I read this book in middle school and absolutely loved it. It’s about a girl that is part of a people treated as lower that slaves. The upper class won’t even touch them. In a twist of fate she is chosen to be Handmaiden to a powerful Firelord. As she learns what this means she uses her power to fight for her people and equality. I really love the character of Elsha and the message behind this book. It’s sad that it’s out of print. I’m trying to find a copy for myself, since the one I read was from the library.

10. “Sloppy Firsts” by Megan McCafferty – This is the first book in the “Jessica Darling” series. It’s also my favorite. It’s written in journal form which I normally hate in a book, but it really works for this series. I like that Jessica is not perfect, I like that she’s so cynical and sarcastic (that sounds so familiar…), I also like that she doesn’t even realize how dramatic she is. lol But she’s a teenager, so she’s very normal. This is just the first in a series that follows Jessica through high school, college, and beyond. I really loved the characters and how they grew and changed over the course of the books. I enjoyed watching Jessica realize exactly how much in common she had with her family as well.

Gadgets that I reeeeeeaaaaaally want!

November 12, 2008

This is a post of all of the gadgets that I really want, but can’t get right now. I will have them someday, it’s just a matter of time. :D

1. MacBook – I currently own a Dell and while it serves it’s purpose I truly drool for a Mac. It’s pitiful really. Windows has just really been getting on my nerves lately. I really want the black one. My next laptop will certainly be a Mac, no more PC’s for me. :D

2. The NEW iPod nano – I have the third gen iPod, which is fairly new so I can’t really justify myself buying this one anytime soon. But as soon as i run out of space I’m getting the new one! It’s so much cuter! And the colors are gorgeous. Since I’m currently a little over half way into my memory, I figure a few more months I can excuse myself and get a new one. :D

3. Nintendo Wii – I love this console! It’s so much fun and totally cute! :D And of course I love that it’s cheaper than the PS3.Anyway, I think I may be getting this one pretty soon anyway. Something to match my Nintendo DS. :D

4. Polaroid PoGo – I saw this in the store and I want it! I’m always taking pics but I don’t currently have a photo printer. I like this because I can print pictures from both my camera and my cell phone. I’m not a really formal picture taker so I would like something like this because the pictures are small enough that I could use them for something simple like a collage of pictures or just stick them anywhere. Plus the printer is small so I can take it with me. It’s so cute!

5. Xbox 360 – I really want this console as well. Especially since the price drop! There are some great games on here that I’d love to play. (To hell with exclusive games!lol) Hopefully this holiday season that I’ll be getting my wish. :D

I know this is a short list. I may update or change it in the future, depending on the changes in my life.

Top Ten Favorite Movies

September 20, 2008

In order to try to post more regularly, I’ve taken to looking for ideas on the web. I’ve found this website that randomly gives you blog ideas. This was one that I thought people might be interested in, since the rest of my life is so boring. This will be a list of my top ten favorite movies at the moment. Subject to change depending on any new movies I’ve seen and just how I feel at any given moment. lol This is in no particular order.

1. Cruel Intentions – Ryan Phillipe. Need I really say more? He is a total hottie. :D Plus I love the cruel Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in this movie. She really needs to play the bitch more often. Add in Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair and this is almost a perfect movie.

2. Kingdom of Heaven – I really love the story behind this movie. I’m a huge fan of historical dramas. And the fact that it has Orlando Bloom in it certainly doesn’t hurt. :D

3. Pirates of the Caribbean – I actually love all three of these movies. I could have listed them separately, but what’s the point? Orlando Bloom, Johnny Depp, and Keira Knightly….need I say more?

4. The Devil Wears Prada – Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep were both awesome in this movie. And I’d never seen Emily Blunt before, but I loved her in this movie! She was absolutely hilarious. :D I loved the fashion as well. I wanted almost anything that came on the screen.

5. Fight Club – This is one of my favorite movies with Brad Pitt. This was so different from what he normally did back then, and he was so hot doing it. :D And of course I’ll watch anything with Edward Norton in it anyway.

6. Step Up – Yes, I love dance movies. I will admit it. And of course it helps that Channing Tatum is in it. I guess it’s just that part of me that really wants to be a dancer but knows that it’s never going to happen.

7. Wanted – I looooove action movies. And this one was totally awesome for me. I love the guns and the car chases and the explosions. I also love James McAvoy, but you never heard that from me.

8. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants – I loved both of these movies. I’ve read the books as well. I guess I love the idea of four friends sticking together through everything, even when they are apart. :D

9. Reign of Fire – I really loved the whole idea of this movie. And Christian was great, as was Matthew McConaughey.

10. Memento – I’d never heard of this movie before I watched it, but I’m so glad that my friend let me know about it. The whole idea behind this movie, of not remembering anything from moment to moment, is so interesting! I also really love how the movie actually moves backwards from scene to scene. It’s this whole buildup that is so intense! Love it!

Well, that was my list of current favs. Some of those movies will still be on my list next week and some may not. ;) Anyway, let me know some of your favorites or recommendations based on mine. I always love to watch a good movie.
